LipiFlow Treatment for Dry Eyes

At Eye Care Professional, we offer the LipiFlow treatment for dry eye relief in Reno, NV. LipiFlow unblocks the microscopic Meibomian Glands within the eyelid margins, which frequently become obstructed, contributing to inflammation, dryness, and irritation of the ocular surface. By removing these obstructions and restoring a more normal flow of these eyelid oil glands, we can stabilize the tear film, which helps protect and improve the ocular surface.

LipiFlow uses a device to warm and massage the eyelids, restoring a more normal function to the eyelids and Meibomian Glands. The treatment itself is comfortable and easy to undergo.

Chronic blepharitis and dry eye syndrome are both long-term conditions that tend to respond to treatment but frequently will recur at some point. Because of this, we may need to repeat the procedure at various intervals depending on a given patient’s condition and response.

Lipiflow Treatment for Blepharitis

Blepharitis and Dry Eye Syndrome are both multifactorial conditions as well, frequently requiring a multi-faceted treatment approach. This treatment may include prescription eye drops, nutritional supplements, eyelid scrubs, and antiseptics. It can also include the use of punctal plug procedures as well as occasional use of antibiotics topically or orally and short-term use of topical steroids. At Eye Care Professionals, we specialize in dry eye disease and blepharitis assessment and treatment and will tailor your treatment plan to your specific case and findings.

These can be difficult conditions to treat because of their chronic and recurrent nature. It is important to find a team of providers committed to this process to ensure proper treatment over time. Reliable care can also prevent some of the late-term consequences and complications if left untreated. You will find our team well-versed and ready to help you address these conditions.

What Is LipiFlow® Dry Eye Treatment?

LipiFlow® is an FDA-approved treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), which causes dry eyes. People with MGD suffer from dry eyes because their Meibomian glands are blocked, preventing them from secreting enough oil. LipiFlow® works by warming up and massaging the inner and outer eyelids to fight those blockages in the Meibomian glands.

How Does LipiFlow® Work?

First, we apply anesthetic drops to your eye to ensure numbing. Once your eyes feel numb, we will place LipiFlow® activators both under and over your eyelids, without touching the surface of the eye. Then, for 12 minutes, the LipiFlow® system will provide both heat and pressure to the eyelids, to dissolve the blockages in your Meibomian glands.

How Long Does LipiFlow® Treatment Last?

LipiFlow® provides long-lasting results of up to two years. LipiFlow®  should be accompanied by other skin rejuvenating and eye care treatments, including eye drops, eyelid scrubs, and more to ensure steady and longer-lasting results.

Is LipiFlow® Treatment Painful?

No, LipiFlow® is not a painful procedure. In fact, patients have compared it with a gentle massage to the eyelid. Remember, we apply anesthetic eye drops to your eyes to ensure they’re numb.

Additionally, the activators don’t make direct contact with your eye surface and release a safe amount of heat to your eyelid. Although you can experience a bit of discomfort after treatment, it will go away quickly.

Who Is a Good candidate for LipiFlow®?

Patients should undergo a comprehensive eye exam to determine if they suffer from tear ducts and gland blockage and are candidates for the treatment. Usually, patients diagnosed with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) and suffering from dry eyes, are candidates for the LipiFlow® procedure.
