What Is LipiFlow® Treatment for Dry Eyes & MGD?

LipiFlow® is an FDA-approved treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), one of the leading causes of evaporative dry eye. MGD occurs when the tiny oil-producing glands along the eyelid margins become blocked, preventing them from releasing the oils needed to keep tears from evaporating too quickly.

LipiFlow uses a device to warm and massage the eyelids, restoring a more normal function to the eyelids and Meibomian Glands. The treatment itself is comfortable and easy to undergo.

By improving the flow of oils into the tear film, LipiFlow can help relieve dry eye symptoms and support long-term ocular surface health.

Chronic blepharitis and dry eye syndrome are both long-term conditions that tend to respond to treatment but will frequently recur. Because of this, we may need to repeat the procedure at various intervals, depending on the patient’s condition and response.

At Eye Care Professionals, we provide the best treatment, specialized disease assessment, and personalized care for every patient.

How LipiFlow® Works to Restore Healthy Tear Film

We perform the 12-minute LipiFlow® procedure in the comfort of our office to help restore healthy Meibomian gland function. Before treatment, we apply numbing drops and gently position the LipiFlow Activator under your eyelids.

The device delivers direct heat to the Meibomian glands while using pulsed massage technology to clear blockages and improve oil flow into the tear film. The device is designed to protect the eye during treatment and does not touch the cornea. Most patients find the procedure comfortable and can resume normal activities shortly afterward.

How Long Do LipiFlow® Results Last?

Most patients experience long-lasting dry eye relief for one to two years after LipiFlow® treatment. However, the duration of LipiFlow results varies with the severity of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). Because MGD is a chronic condition, some patients may benefit from a repeat treatment schedule every 12 to 24 months to maintain healthy gland function and tear film stability. We may also recommend complementary at-home care and ongoing monitoring to help support longer-lasting results.

Am I a Candidate for LipiFlow® Dry Eye Treatment?

You may be a candidate for LipiFlow® if you have been diagnosed with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), experience chronic dry eye symptoms, or have not found sufficient relief with artificial tears alone. At Eye Care Professionals, all patients should undergo a comprehensive meibomian gland evaluation as part of the eye examination to determine if they suffer from tear duct and gland blockage. A thorough dry eye exam in Reno allows us to determine whether LipiFlow® is the right treatment option for your needs.

LipiFlow® vs. Other Dry Eye Treatments

There are several dry eye treatment options available, and the best choice depends on the cause of your symptoms. While some treatments focus on reducing inflammation or preserving tears, LipiFlow® uses thermal pulsation for dry eyes to treat blocked Meibomian glands and improve the tear film.

  • LipiFlow®: Clears blocked Meibomian glands using heat and massage.
  • Restasis®, Xiidra®, Cequa®: Help manage inflammation and support tear production.
  • Punctal Plugs: Help retain tears on the eye’s surface.
  • IPL Therapy: Supports treatment of certain MGD-related conditions.

What to Expect During Your LipiFlow® Appointment in Reno?

During your LipiFlow® appointment in Reno, our team will first review your symptoms and treatment plan before applying numbing eye drops, which typically take about five minutes to become effective. Once your eyes are prepared, the LipiFlow® device is positioned comfortably under your eyelids, and the 12-minute procedure begins. As a no-downtime dry eye treatment, most patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately after their appointment.
