Procedure for correcting aging eyesight adds to the list of “firsts” for Eye Care Professionals, and brings vision correction opportunities to Nevada residents.

Eye Care Professionals is pleased to announce that Dr. Matthew Mills, M.D. is the first surgeon in northern Nevada to surgically implant a new type of intraocular lens (IOL), the RayOne EMV, which provides patients undergoing cataract surgery a greater range of vision through its optics. The lens features spherical aberration to provide improved vision for both distance and intermediate ranges, decreasing a patient’s need for glasses. The procedure was performed at the Visionary Surgery Center of Nevada in south Reno.

Presbyopia is a loss of the eye’s ability to focus caused by aging. The RayOne EMV lens, designed by renowned Australian ophthalmologist and eye surgeon Dr. Graham Barrett and manufactured by Rayner, a designer and manufacturer of intraocular lenses and proprietary injection devices, leverages a patented design that minimizes “halos” often seen by those with intraocular lenses. It also ensures patients experience a greater functional range of vision.

“Presbyopia is a natural part of aging, but with the technology of the RayOne EMV, we are able to correct a patient’s vision so they are able to see well both near and far, and also peripherally,” said eye surgeon, Dr. Mills. “This lens is special in that it is designed to give patients excellent vision at distance and intermediate ranges without the adverse visual phenomena associated with many other Presbyopia Correcting IOLs.”

A study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a division of the United States Department of Health and Human Services that conducts biomedical and public health research, projects that visual impairment and blindness cases in the U.S. are expected to double by 2050. The team at Eye Care Professionals has been growing to match the needs of Nevada’s population and this new procedure is expected to garner popularity as the average age of Nevadans increases and our population continues to grow.

In addition to being another corrective tool for visually impaired patients, the eye surgery adds to Eye Care Professionals list of notable operations. The practice was the first to perform LenSx Bladeless Laser Cataract Surgery in Nevada in 2009 as well as the first to perform Wavefront LASIK in Reno in 2004.

“We pride ourselves on being innovators at Eye Care Professionals,” said Dr. Mills. “Being the first eye surgeon in northern Nevada to perform this life changing surgery is another testament to our commitment to providing leading-edge eye care solutions for our patients.”
